Los Angeles-based designer (and 21 year old grandson of oil magnate J. Paul Getty) ) August Getty's Spring 2016 "Thread of Man" show,
was simply billed vaguely as a "unique, visceral experience" and no other details were provided..... other than those followed by a random last minute phone call from long time friend and colleague, Celebrity Makeup Artist, Sharon Gault. An invitation to go behind the scenes with a photographer and video crew to cover the hair and makeup. We waited, baited breath for clearance and just about 2 hours
before the show was scheduled to begin at 7.00 pm, I set off. Meeting up immediately with a peak rush hour nightmare traffic to get into
Universal Studios. I sat in a non-moving traffic bottleneck panicking I was going to miss it all. Not wanting to miss a beat of this, and with sheer determination, I told my crews stuck in traffic to meet me there somehow. After several go around attempts, I found the designated, "word of mouth" pick up point..but only by recognizing a few fellow fashionistas and jovial fun ladies (from the Pentacostal choir) , who looked like David LaChapelle "characters".... . I was now separated from my camera crew but I didn't care. I just wanted to get there!
No disappointment. I entered into another world. The surrealist and ethereal magical world of LaChapelle ...the back drop lot ..a Wild West town transformed into an interactive "Heaven & Hell" themed art exhibition. A night of creative imagination, fashion and style, by legendary photographer and mastermind photographer himself, David LaChapelle featuring the fashion of August Getty.HEAVEN SIDE: Getty presented an interesting collection of futuristic, minamilistic, silhouettes in neutral 5 shades of foundation, inspired by Celebrity Leading ladies for his "Thread of Man" collection. Models including the designer's own sister, Natalia Getty sported mushroom bobs behind saloon windows in breast showing latex dresses, sheath gowns, and umbrella-bottom dresses. The scene was a wedding preparation maybe a little "Kill Billish"..... in the Wild West setting
HELL SIDE : a scene from behind a chain-link fence, called "hell" , and cordoned off with Police yellow tape housed dozens of different junk television screens rolling clips of reality TV queen Kim Kardashian and presidential hopeful Donald Trump played, among current war CNN news stories.
LaChapelle had transformed the scene into a dystopian, multimedia, strange apocalyptic wasteland complete with 1940s parlour music played in the background as clips of Donald Trump speeches from Fox, and terrorist explosions whirred together in a stack of junk TV's and models showcased themselves in zombie-like floating store dummies. There were the words from LaChapelles famous Coffee Table Book "Heaven" and "Hell" in neon light. The event showcased the young designer's Spring/Summer 2016 collection, and depicted women in a way that had us conflicted with bare breasts clearly showing, and ending with a Pentecostal choir hand-chosen by LaChapelle . As we all sang along clapping to their version of "Oh Happy Day" - we felt the LOVE!~ LaChapelle style!
As VIP guests wined and dined in a tent just up a hill we all watched in awe as David brought it all together. Then, it was back on the shuttle bus and off to the private afterparty which was packed at the Blind Dragon on Sunset. A really memorable night and collection by August Getty. The Celebrity VIP guest list only predictably included a host of stars such as actresses Jamie King and Jessica Szhor, model Jessica Stam, socialites It girl/artist/model Langley Fox, stylish twins Sama and Haya Kahdra, and celebrity spawns (Hayley Hasselhoff). and the grand finale featured a live choir for its grand finale
Celebrity Makeup Artist Sharon Gault was "Devine" for the night with hair styled by Craig Ghanji using Enjoy Hair Products and Devine and Gigi's makeup by Anthony Nguyen from OPUS Beauty using Makeup Forever.
The Models showcased the collection as showroom mannequins, with faceless expressions and far away looks which created an eerie vibe. They were inside faux store fronts for the Western town, and encouraged the audience to be voyeurs.
